Garrett's Partula

Partula garrettii

This small snail was found in several valleys on the west side of Raiatea island with different valleys supporting three different subspecies: garrettii, rustica and thalia. A small number were found alive in one valley in 1991 and these gave rise to the population that still survives in captivity. In 1992 freshly dead snails were found on Raiatea, probably just hours after the species became extinct in the wild, following invasion of the valleys by Euglandina.
