The diversity of Partula snails

Over 150 species of Partula snails have been described from islands between New Guinea and French Polynesia. Many of these are very poorly known and based on old descriptions; it has been not clear how many of these are valid species. Researchers are attempting to evaluate the true level of diversity and to understand how the different species have evolved. Existing research projects are:

  • Genetic diversity of Partula - research led by Diarmid O Foighil at the University of Michigan
  • Species diversity of Partula, type specimens and evolution - by Justin Gerlach

For the currently recognised species see here, and a synonymy of the Partulidae cand be downloaded, both are summarised from "Icons of Evolution".
